Jean-Jacques Gonvers studied medicine at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland, after which he worked for 2 years in the domain of fundamental immunology at the Institute of Biochemistry and Cancer Research in Lausanne.

He then accomplished his postgraduate studies in internal medicine at the St-Loup Hospital in Pompaples, Switzerland, at the University Medical Outpatient Department of the University of Lausanne, Switzerland, and at the University Medical Outpatient Department of the University of Bern, Switzerland. He then worked successively in 1974, 1976, 1979 and 1980 at the following institutions as a Postgraduate Fellow and as an Honorary Clinical Assistant: Central Middlesex Hospital in London (Sir Francis Avery-Jones) and St. Mark’s Hospital in London (Prof. J. Lennard-Jones, Dr C.B. Williams). In 1980, he was appointed Assistant Professor (Privat Docent) at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lausanne; he was appointed Associate Professor in 1988 and Ordinary Professor in 2002.

Jean-Jacques Gonvers is the author or co-author of more than 120 publications in major peer-reviewed journals and is a member of several medical societies in Switzerland, in Europe and in the United States of America.

His main research interests are appropriateness and quality of gastrointestinal endoscopy, chronic viral hepatitis and cirrhotic ascites.
