Valérie Pittet obtained her diploma of general engineer of the Ecole Polythechnique Féminine (EPF), France, in 1991 and her PhD at the Swiss Institute of Technology in 1996. Since 1996, she collaborates at the Health Care Evaluation Unit (Head, Prof. Bernard Burnand) at the Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine at the University of Lausanne. She participates to the management and exploitation of large databases, works on routine activity reporting and healthcare assessement related with anaesthesiology or prehospital emergency care in the Canton de Vaud. For many years, she is also working in the improvement of the RAND appropriateness method, in relation to the development of the criteria, their availability via computerized decision support tools (website, pda), or in the application of appropriateness criteria to existing large clinical databases. Since 2006, she actively participates to the Swiss IBD cohort study, coordinates the Datacenter and collaborates to research projects.
